File Form 1040 A
- Form 1040A is designed for single persons or married couples WITH children who have tax issues not complex enough to require Form 1040, but with tax issues too complex for Form 1040EZ . It is a two-page form that can be filed with other tax forms or schedules.
- Only U.S. Citizens or resident aliens can file Form 1040A.
- The only income that can be reported is:
- Wages/salary reported on Form W-2.
- Interest income reported on Form 1099-INT.
- Dividends reported on Form 1099-DIV.
- Unemployment compensation reported on Form 1099-G.
- State tax refund from the previous year's tax returns (reported on a different version of Form 1099-G). Note that this income is taxable ONLY IF you itemized your deductions the previous year on Schedule A.
- Distributions from IRAs or pension plans reported on Form 1099-R. Note that only normal distributions (code #1 of Form 1099-R) can be filed on Form 1040A. Early distributions must be filed on Form 1040.
- Social Security benefits reported on Form SSA-1099.
- You can claim a variety of deductions on Form 1040A. They include:
- Penalties on early withdrawal from savings (as reported on Form 1099-INT).
- Contributions to traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).
- Student loan interest.
- Jury duty pay you received but were forced to give to your employer in exchange for receiving your normal pay.
- You can claim a variety of credits on Form 1040A. They include:
- Child or dependent care credit .
- Credit for the elderly or disabled.
- Education credits (Note that tax deductions for tuition must be claimed on Form 1040).
- Retirement savings contributions credit.
- Child tax credit.
